Iris Apfel: The New Fashion Documentary

At the epicentre of the ‘Advanced Style' movement, the belief that personal style only advances with age, is 93 year old New Yorker Iris Apfel. Queens born and now Park Avenue situated, Iris is a certifiable icon. Describing herself as "the world's oldest living teenager", Iris is known for her bold fashion sense and fearless expression of personal style; she isn't afraid to be different and has personality in abundance. Usually as people get older they tend to slow down a little, but not Iris. In 2005, when Iris was 83, the Metropolitan Museum in New York staged an exhibition of her wardrobe which showcased a selection of her exquisite pieces and extraordinary outfits. Since then, her career and status have catapulted and now Iris is the busiest she has ever been, which is truly admirable.

A natural trailblazer, Apfel arguably sparked the recent rise of the senior supermodel that has seen many interesting campaigns; Joan Didion for Céline, Charlotte Rampling for Nars, Jessica Lange for Marc Jacobs Beauty, Joni Mitchell for Yves Saint Laurent and even Apfel herself is the current face of handbag design house, Kate Spade, amongst a whole host of other fashion and career accolades. And now, she has her own documentary. Iris was documented by American cinematographer and director Albert Maysles and takes us behind the scenes on the life of this "rare bird of fashion” as she is so endearingly known. From documenting her shopping tactics and letting us step into her vast and diverse collection of clothing and accessories exhibited throughout the numerous rooms of her apartment, to her wise words (and often hilarious and genius one-liners) and a meeting with Kanye West, Iris is a must-see for all fashion fans. In awe of her soaring spirit and continued work in the fashion industry, Team LBD thinks we could all learn a little something from Iris, whatever your age.
