The Annual Emmy Awards took place this week over in LA and there was a great selection of black dresses on show which always makes for a very happy Team LBD. Although there are a few bright surprises (more of that later) we wanted black, glamourous floor-sweepers and that’s what we got.
In the sleek and simple LBD corner we have Family Guy actress Alexandra Breckenridge and Fashion Police presenter Giuliana Rancic in Romona Keveza. They looked stunning and sexy in satin, with both ladies rocking a thigh-high split. If you think you could brave a daring leg-split maxi then we recommend going all out in the BlingDeenie Maxi Dress. The long sleeves balance the high split making it more wearable- we promise! Wear with a statement necklace like this Lagom Ava Necklace. And if you want to add a pop of colour, try one of our Kelly Brown Clutches. Bright, on-trend and the perfect size to fit all your essentials in.
In the more intricate and experimental corner we have Mad Men actress January Jones in Zac Posen and doing it for the over 50s is Glenn Close in an amazing black lace panel dress with striking details. Proving you don’t have to compromise on style as you get older with the three-quarter length sleeves making it more flattering.
Others to note in the LBD camp are Lena Headey and her gothic lace wonder and actress and Katy Perry’s BFF Shannon Woodward taking a plain black dress and making it shine with amazing golden embellished detail.
For those opting to shun black and go for full-on colour, there was plenty to delight your peepers. Bright block colours from canary yellow and orange to forest green and aqua blue were popular choices with everyone from Julianna Moore and Claire Danes in Lanvin to presenters Cat Deeley and Padma Lakshmi in Monique Lhuillier all choosing singular colour over print. If you like the look of solid colour then why not try HMH Couture’s ‘Erato’ Dress or if floor-length is too full-on this hot pink mini dress from Reiss would be perfect for parties.
Metallics were also popular in both black and vibrant hues. Sofia Vergara in Zuhair Murad and Julianne Hough both looked like shimmering mermaids floating along the red carpet in teal and blue gowns. Lucy Liu worked sci-fi Versace whilst Kerry Washington worked Vivienne Westwood. 30 Rock actress Jane Krakowski looked elegant in silver sequins too. For full on embellishment look no further than the Reiss Rebecca Dress or for even more drama Kate Fearnley’s amazing Erin dress- a true Team LBD favourite! For a nod to the trend without going all out, Jasper Garvida’s new Zena dress is ideal.
Micro trends we noticed on the red carpet included fairy-tale dresses on the likes of Zooey Deschanel, cool blue tones on Heidi Klum and full-skirts and fishtails as the skirt of choice on every celeb worth their mettle.
