Party icon: Kate Moss

Famous for: She’s without a doubt the most famous party girl of our time. From her early days as the original ‘heroin-chic’ supermodel, celebrating her 21st birthday alongside then-boyfriend Johnny Depp at the legendary LA Viper Room nightclub, to her infamous 34-hour party marathon in honour of her 34th birthday, or her three day blow-out to celebrate turning 40, Ms Moss certainly knows how to have a good time.Kate’s party nights have included ultra-glamorous The Beautiful and The Damned (her favourite-ever book) theme, where she donned a vintage blue, sequinned gown and stylishly saw in her third decade alongside friends Naomi Campbell and Alexander McQueen at the 1920s hotel, Claridges in London.

For her 40th, she took it a step further and held a 100-hour Glastonbury-style weekender at her Cotswolds home estimated to have cost a breath-taking £100,000. Arriving in a vintage Porsche (a birthday gift from Topshop boss Sir Philip Green), she ensured all had a good time with a specially purposed rave tent that was DJed by none other than Mark Ronson. Her guests included fashion designers Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, and musician Noel Gallagher, whilst indie-folk band Florence and the Machine were the star performance. Now that’s a party to remember.

Get her party style: Kate is a huge little black dress fan but when it comes to birthday celebrations, she loves to up the glam factor. From her Chanel star-print jumpsuit and matching gold star painted over her eye to see in her 34thbirthday, to her truly gorgeous 1920s dress and cape straight out of a F Scott Fitzgerald novel, Kate’s style is as legendary as her parties. Party icon: Elizabeth Taylor

Famous for: Renowned for her love of glitzy events, famous gentlemen and big diamonds, iconic screen starlet Elizabeth Taylor was a regular face in the party scene throughout the 60s and 70s. With two Academy awards and a staggering eight weddings under her belt, she was easily one of the biggest names in Hollywood, and regularly papped at the most glamorous events including parties thrown at epic New York nightclub Studio 54 and London’s swanky Dorchester Hotel.

Age certainly didn’t slow Liz down – she took over Disneyland Florida for an evening to celebrate her 60th birthday. Guests included singer Stevie Wonder, actor Richard Gere and 60’s icon Joni Mitchell who were all treated to an exclusive night of rides, hotdogs and entertainment by Disney characters. Liz maintained her glamorous signature style right up until her death in March 2011, rarely seen without a statement piece from her diamond jewellery collection.

Get her party style: Elizabeth Taylor is certainly remembered for her partying habits and perhaps even more so for her ultra-glamorous and polished style. Party icon: Beyonce

Famous for: With a young child, superstar husband and a relentless work ethic, the current queen of pop isn’t known for her wild party antics or stumbling out of nightclubs, but she is getting a name for herself as the party organiser everyone would like in their little black book, after throwing three lavish bashes already this year. First up was the record launch party for her surprise, self-titled album Beyoncé, hosted at cool and kitsch 80s themed arcade Dave & Buster’s in New York. Guests included singer J Cole, rapper Drake and designer Alexander Wang who were all treated to Beyonce themed cakes and party favours as well as light up bows like those from her video “XO”.

Her mum, fashionista Tina Knowles (other half of Beyonce’s House of Deréon fashion label) was then treated to an extravagant masquerade ball in New Orleans to celebrate her 60th birthday, where Bey danced the night away in a stunning Naaem Khan gown alongside star-studded guests including Kris Jenner, Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Rowland. The last family member to reap Beyonce’s party flair was daughter Blue Ivy, who celebrated her two-year birthday bash with chimpanzees, lemurs, penguins and kangaroos thanks to Bey hiring out the entire Miami wildlife park Jungle Island Zoo. Party icon: Madonna

Famous for: She taught us all how to strike a pose, gave us countless party anthems, loves to court controversy and is the biggest selling female artist of all time, so it goes without saying that Madonna has led a colourful life. And despite being well into her fifth decade and now mum to four children, she’s yet to tame her party ways. Last year Madge made news worldwide after celebrating her 55th birthday at a private chateau in Southern France channelling the look of French Queen Marie Antoinette. In a curly blonde wig and ornate, embellished corset, she entertained guests alongside her 25-year-old boyfriend Brahaim. Luxury bakery Ladurée catered the extravagant event and there was a decadent outdoor, quilted bar area stocked with champagne and cocktails for her guests to indulge. With parties like this in her agenda, we get the feeling Madonna isn’t going to be hanging up her dancing shoes anytime soon.

Get her party style: Another LBD advocate, Madonna is more often than not dressed in some sort of black ensemble, whether that’s a statement gown or a black tuxedo suit and cane as most recently seen at the 2014 Grammy Awards. Famous for: From her overtly sexy music videos to her raucous behaviour at parties, singer Rihanna has come to be quite the party girl. Signed by Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation, she is no stranger to hanging with the ‘in crowd’ that includes Kanye West, Rita Ora and MIA. Think of the Bajan beauty and you might also remember those photos of her smoking a special cigarette and morning-after tweets such as ‘U know life is great when you wake up at 9am drunk’. Rihanna even once treated her crew and a selection of lucky fans to joining her on her 777 tour, where they accompanied the singer on a private Boeing jet for seven days of champagne-drinking, show-watching and in-flight partying (except the pilot, of course).

Miss Chung, well accredited for her chic style, has even had a Mulberry bag named after her and carries her unique flair into her social life too. When she’s not working in the USA, attending fashion shows and trying her hand at book writing and designing, she’s out with friends at enviably glamorous events. She recently flew back to England from LA especially to mark her 30th birthday with Harry Styles, Kelly Osbourne and Nick Grimshaw, and enjoyed a night drinking Veuve Clicquot champagne at a private suite at celebrity favourite London hotel, Edition. Daughter of rock legend Mick Jagger, Jade has hosted parties all around the world, from her regular Friday night at superclub Pacha in Ibiza, to elaborate promotional events back in her second home, London. When Jagger collaborated with vodka company Belvedere in 2008 she put her jewellery making skills to use and created a luxurious £150,000 white gold, diamond and sapphire encrusted ice pick (aka the Jagger Dagger). She attended the big unveiling in Manhattan, before jetting off to own VIP launch party in Cannes the following night with Mark Ronson rocking the decks and celebrity guests including Mike Tyson, P Diddy and Goldie Hawn. She also recently caused a stir on a first class flight from London to New York, after her party got a little too excitable for the other passengers. Free first class booze was to blame, of course…

Get her party style: A difficult one to pin down, Jade Jagger even said herself she wasn’t quite sure of her style. A fan of Vintage, she even has her own vintage shop, the Jade Jagger Studio, next to Portobello Market in London and she can often be seen in sixties inspired shifts and bohemian prints. Party icon: Nan Kempner

Famous for:  The original New York socialite, Nan Kempner was famous for dominating the fashion scene, charity events, galas and parties for over 50 years from the 1950s. An only child from San Francisco born into a wealthy family, Nan made it her life’s ambition to be a leader in society. She moved from New York to London and became the original It girl, during a time when It girls were society women who knew how to dress well and knew where to be seen (sorry Paris).

Nan was in high demand and was the guest everyone wanted at their do. She regularly travelled to London and Paris to attend charity galas and fashion shows; in fact she didn’t miss a single Paris couture show in four decades! She threw notorious parties and prided herself on being an excellent host. Regular Sunday-night spaghetti dinner parties at her Manhattan home were an enviable invite to receive and guests included Princess Diana, Betsy Bloomingdale and President Reagan, whilst her favourite ever party was her 50th wedding anniversary, with catering for 476 people at the New York Botanical Gardens.

Over her lifetime, Nan helped raise a staggering $75 million for a variety of charities and worked as a contributing editor for French Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, as well as a design consultant for Tiffany & Co. A huge fan of fashion, she amassed the largest private collection of haute couture clothing that exists today and just some of this can be seen at the Met’s Costume Institute exhibition. Her decadent and elegant look reigned until well into her seventies; she loved Dior, Valentino, Oscar de la Renta but her all-time favourite was Yves Saint Laurent. Once denied entry to exclusive Parisian restaurant La Côte Basque because she was wearing a pantsuit, Nan simply removed the trousers and walked in wearing only an Yves Saint Laurent tunic.

Get her party style: Nan Kempner wore couture like a second skin and as a result was always beautifully turned out for whichever party she attended. Heels were di rigueur for Nan and she even broke her hip when wearing a pair of eight inch Galliano heels whilst preparing for a night out. So you want to party Nan Kempner style? Think chic long flowing Grecian gowns, Chanel boucle jackets, impeccably tailored knee-length pencil dresses and of course nothing too simple, she wore couture after all so have fun, inject some texture and think fashion. Party icon: Rita Ora

Famous for: Queen of quirky, pop singer extraordinaire Rita Ora has a penchant for singing about partying and she certainly lives up to the lyrics. In 2012 she made headlines after racking up an enormous £10,000 bar tab at Mayfair hotspot Mahiki (a favourite of the Royal Princes) where she treated pop star duo Rizzle Kicks to Treasure Chest cocktails and magnums of Circo vodka. When Rita’s song ‘How We Do’ came on, the songstress went wild on the dance floor and the singer had to ask for more security as was overwhelmed by fans on the dancefloor.

Rita celebrated her last birthday at The Box nightclub in London, where her DJ boyfriend Calvin Harris and friends Kelly Brooke and Jaime Winstone joined her for a Studio 54 inspired, 70’s themed bash, that went on until the early hours. Shortly after she jetted off to Las Vegas where she saw in the New Year at the famous Hakkasan club, sipping Jack Daniels in the elevated DJ booth until 2014 rang in.
Get her party style: For Rita’s 23rd birthday, she pulled out all the stops to up the glamour, covering herself in glitter and donning a revealing red gown with a daring thigh high split, hood and low-cut cowl neck for the 70s themed night. For the 2013 Brit Award after parties Rita opted for a stunning black Alexandre Vauthier sequin gown, again with a thigh high split, this time she partied a little too hard and ended up leaving with a hole in the gown. Fancy smouldering Rita style, well prepare to bare and up the glamour in racy outfits with cool quirky details. Shop her style now.

Sedgwick fitted in perfectly with the crazy, party scene of Warhol’s infamous Factory studio and everyone loved her. After dwindling away her trust fund money given to her by her extremely wealthy parents, she successfully used her society contacts, stunning looks and talent for entertaining to get by. Sadly, she was seduced by the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle of which drugs were a part, and she passed away of an overdose aged just 28. Nonetheless, her style lives on, with everyone from Anne Hathaway, Pixie Lott and Sienna Miller taking inspiration from the ultimate 60s pin-up.

Bad girls

They don’t quite make it into our top party girls list but that doesn’t mean they don’t party in style, or a style of sorts anyway... We’ve got the Disney stars turned bad girls, serial twerker Miley Cyrus and serial flasher Lindsay Lohan, hotel heiress Paris Hilton and her infamous video debut, ex-X Factor judge Tulisa for her drug-dealing scandal, and of course the paparazzi’s favourite troubled star, the late Amy Winehouse. Sadly for these ladies, to make the LBD cut a little more decorum is required.
