She’s been cast as leading lady and love interest Anastasia Steele in the most anticipated film of the year, Fifty Shades of Grey, little known actress Dakota Johnson is about to be the next big thing in Hollywood. Not only is she starring alongside the perfectly chiselled Jamie Dornan, but her role in the dramatic love story is sure to be one most A-list actresses were fighting for (especially when they found out who was the leading man!).
So how did she get the role I hear you ask? Director of the film Sam Taylor-Johnson explained: “Dakota has the ability to play so fragile and vulnerable, but with this underlying strength that makes you feel she is going to triumph.” We can’t wait to see.
Although this isn’t her first role on the big screens, (you will have spotted her in The Social Network and 21 Jump Street perhaps) it’s certainly a game-changer for the 25-year-old actress, who was born to acting parents Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, plus her step-father is the one and only Antonio Banderas. And so it seems she’s an actress destined for the stage who is finally getting her big break, plus she was American Vogue’s cover girl for February – that’s when you know you’ve made it.
But down to the real nitty gritty, it’s her red carpet style that we really want to get acquainted with. A style that seems to have the same playfulness of her character too, sometimes feminine and girly but there’s also a tough, risqué attitude to her style that we really love.
Rocking the red carpet
Not only was the navy Jason Wu gown Dakota wore to the Met Ball last year absolutely incredible, but you don’t see gloves often on the red carpet, and we have to say she really rocked them. And a girl after our own hearts, Dakota draped herself in a fifty shades of shimmer gown from Chanel earlier this year for the Golden Globes red carpet. Tres chic!
Ladylike in cream
Showing her penchant for a purer look too, Dakota looks lovely in these pale nude tones, wearing a Gucci column gown for a LACMA art and film gala in November last year and before that in a simple and feminine Calvin Klein dress for an event in Singapore. We love this girly Chanel number that she wore to the 12th Annual Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in 2013, paired perfectly with strappy nude wedges and a bold clutch.
Classic in black
Showing a different side to herself yet again, Dakota wowed in a unique Gucci ball gown at the LCMA gala in 2013, which featured interesting metallic tones and extravagant feathers. Whilst at the premiere of Don Jon in New York earlier the same year she was casually classic in a simple shift dress and black accessories that highlighted her slim pins and sleek, sartorial personality.
Sexy in red
Proving she’s certainly no wallflower, Dakota’s fair skin and blonde hair make an impressive contrast in these vivid red dresses for two different film premieres in 2013 in America last year. Knowing bold red makes a statement in itself, Dakota opts for simple, clean shapes that show the maturity of her style. We’re certain we’ll be spotting her on all the best dressed lists this year.
So now what we’re most eager to see is what she’ll be wearing for the film’s premiere, released for Valentine’s Day. For the universal premiere, of course she donned the LBD and she looked incredible in a plunging Dior, tuxedo-style gown. Revealing just a hint of legs as she walked, the demure yet cheeky dress was the perfect design for the film’s first premiere.
