The Oscars 2015 red carpet best bits

It's surely the most highly anticipated event in the Hollywood calendar, the night when the most prominent A-list actors and actresses spend days and weeks deciding on their outfits, whilst in some cases their dresses take months to make. This year's Oscars red carpet was no excuse; and although it rained all day and the make shift roof threatened to collapse on Hollywood's finest, you couldn't tell from the poised pictures. Take a look at our favourite princess-worthy looks from the red carpet...

Cinderella came to the ball...

Jennifer Lopez had all eyes on her for this year's Oscars red carpet, wearing an incredible Elie Saab embellished gown.

The two sides of Rita Ora

Rita Ora also made her presence noticed! For the Oscars red carpet she wore a striking, strapless black ball gown by Marchesa, which fitted her slender figure like a glove and certainly had the wow factor. However for the Vanity Fair after party she took quite a different style slant in a very risqué dress, which featured a completely sheer side panel - certainly one for our Raciest Red Carpet Dresses Hall Of Fame.

The Nominees

Both nominated for their acting, these two style heroes both looked incredible on the red carpet. Felicity Jones donned a custom made Alexander McQueen gown for the occasion whilst Keira Knightley glowed in a pretty Valentino dress that flattered her baby bump beautifully.

Bringing Brights Back

Adding a much needed splash of colour to the red carpet, Rosamund Pike, Jennifer Hudson and Dakota Johnson all opted for vibrantly toned dresses. Rosamund flaunted her slender post-baby figure in a stunning red Givency by Tiscardo Tisci gown, whilst Jennifer beamed in a simple yellow column dress with delicate emerald earrings and ring. Fifty Shades of Grey's Dakota Johnson also wore a scarlet number and paired her Saint Laurent number with $2 million of jewels! Also veering away from this year's neutral palette, Anna Kendrick opted for a peach coloured custom made gown by Thakoon, whilst Emma Stone dazzled like one of the Oscars statues in an amazingly beaded Elie Saab dress. Looking enviably beautiful as usual, Scarlett Johansson was a breath of fresh air in an emerald green Atelier Versace gown, which she paired with an unusual beaded necklace that completed her look perfectly.

Natural Beauties

Gwyneth Paltrow went for a more minimalist approach to the Oscars red carpet wearing a unique, custom made Ralph and Russo ball gown, which featured a pretty, rose bloom shoulder detail. Jessica Chastain showed off her ample cleavage in a Givenchy by Ricardo Tisci gown that complemented her amazing hour-glass figure. Zoe Saldana also opted for a more simple design and added some glitz with a stunning diamond necklace.

The LBDs

Proving that black really is the chicest shade, these fashionistas made a strong impression at the Oscars in the fuss-free but oh-so-glamorous LBD. Sienna Miller opted for an Oscar de la Renta gown straight off the AW15 runway, whilst Cate Blanchett wore a simple John Galliano gown, sartorially accessorised with a turquoise Tiffany & Co necklace. Focus actress Margot Robbie seduced in a plunging Saint Laurent gown, and paired her look with a sleek bob, red lips and statement necklace.

All that Glitters

Proving it's not just the dress that makes headlines, Nicole Kidman paired her shimmering sequin Louis Vuitton gown with a staggering $7 million of Harry Winston diamonds - not too bad being a celebrity! Naomi Watts looked fierce in a fully sequinned dress by Armani Prive that no doubt looked even more incredible in the flesh than it does in the pictures. Hand crafted and designed by Karl Lagerfeld himself, Julianne Moore's breathtaking Chanel gown could have got an Oscar itself. Taking a mammoth 927 hours to make, it was certainly Julianne's night as she also took home the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Still Alice.

Cream Dream

With the complexions to wear a cream dress with confidence and not look completely washed out, Lupita Nyong'o, Jennifer Aniston and Kerry Washington all looked elegantly chic in the pale shade. Lupita was a vision in a Calvin Klein Collection fully embellished gown, which gave her curves in all the right places. Opting for a beaded Versace dress, with sheer skirt and thigh split, Jennifer was her usual glowing self on the red carpet. Kerry Washinton was impeccably turned out in a a strapless evening gown by Miu Miu that she paired with a chic box clutch and elegant drop earrings.

Monochrome Statement

Nominees Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep and Patricia Arquette looked suitably smart for the occasion; Reese flaunted her figure in a Tom Ford gown, whilst Meryl stayed in touch with her signature androgynous look with a smart jacket and trouser combination. Winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Boyhood, Patricia was polished in a Rosetta Getty dress but certainly made a statement in her acceptance award, in which she stressed the need for equal pay for women.

Gaga Gowns

If there's ever going to be any major excitement on the red carpet, you kow you can count on Lady Gaga to bring the drama. Making her presence known, she wore a an extravagant custom made Azzedine Alaia dress, but took her look to the next level by adding some intriguing red rubber gloves into the mix. Later on she performed a rendition of The Sound Of Music in another white theatrical gown. If all this talk of ball gowns has given you a little dress envy then take a look at our extesive collection of evening dresses here. Unfortunately we don't have any rubber gloves on offer currently!
