It was a sad morning for the fashion world as news of the death of renowned New York based fashion designer Oscar de la Renta was heard. The hugely popular designer was renowned for his fabulously feminine dresses and forward-thinking designs that were worn by celebrities and coveted by fashionistas across the world. Most recently Oscar de la Renta made headlines with his role in one of the most talked about marriages of the year as George Clooney tied the knot with lawyer Amal Alamuddin. And who should the lucky lady have design her dress but the coveted designer, de la Renta. Here we see him looking pleased with the bride-to-be at her final fitting. After stints at Balenciaga in Mardid, and Lanvin in Paris, in the early sixties he moved to New York where he set up his label. Born in the Dominican Republic and making waves through the fashion industry he lost his battle with cancer and died at his home in Connecticut at the age of 82 yesterday. It wasn’t just his beautiful designs that made him popular, but his friendly demeanour and striking good looks also made him the go-to designer and the desired plus one for famous women, whether they were models and actresses or even first ladies. Just some of the few celebs that have chosen de la Renta for their red carpet moments include (from left to right): Jessica Biel at her Los Angeles premiere of Valentine's Day in 2010, Cameron Diaz taking the spotlight at the 2010 Oscars, Nicole Kidman at an Omega press event in Vienna in 2013, Jennifer Garner in a  fringed number at the 2014 Oscars, and Jessica Alba at the 2013 Golden Globe awards in a pretty orange blush number. Amy Adams topped all the best dressed lists when she wore this stunning grey frothy-skirted dress to the Academy Awards in 2013. The American Hustle actress brought iconic old black and white pictures to the designer to help him to create something new and original, and of course in true Oscar de la Renta style it was a spectacularly feminine and elegant masterpiece. The designer even had an episode of Sex and the City dedicated to him as fashionista Carrie Bradshaw wore one of his stunning frocks to the ballet. Actress Sarah Jessica Parker wore this design by de la Renta to the Met Ball earlier this year, showing the diversity of his skills in this monochrome retro number.
