The best dresses at the VMAs

The best dresses at the VMAs

This year’s Video Music Awards was made up of the most eclectic mix of celebrities and show-stopping outfits we’ve seen in some time. From sweet and innocent Taylor Swift in a chic and sleek all-white trouser suit to Ke$ha in a super-short but very sweet lace LBD there were sartorial surprises all round. But did they make Team LBD’s best dressed list? Read on to find out…

All aboard

If you can’t wear a train-trailing dress on the red carpet, where can you wear one? Apart from on your wedding day, maybe. This year Miley Cyrus took note of the sheer-is-more trend in her long-sleeved black floor-length dress. We’re not sure about the ex-Disney star’s new quiffed hair-do but the grown-up, Gothic glam look gets a big tick in our book. Following suit was Katy Perry who’s floral print evening dress accentuated her killer body and made a serious style statement with the extra-long hem.

It was all about the acronyms last night and our favourite wardrobe staple reigned supreme once again with the likes of Demi Lovato and Ke$ha championing our little black hero. The new US X Factor judge, Demi, marked the occasion with not one, but two LBDs but this short and sassy black sequin dress was our favourite. We love how the long sleeves toned down the mini dress design and how the heavy embellishment was carefully placed to accentuate her fab figure- the perfect inspiration in the run up to Christmas! Pop’s very own grubby girl, Ke$ha, also made an appearance in a statement-making short dress which featured tiny black floral applique and just a hint of her former self with carefully placed sheer panels. Welcome back to good, clean fashion, Ke$ha!

Knock-out neutrals

Creams, whites, beige and a whole host of marvellous metallics graced the red runway this year and gave the black and bright ball gowns a real run for their money. In a understated but jaw-droppingly-divine long white dress Rihanna looked like a modern day Marilyn Monroe. Accessorised with red lips and nude strappy shoes this is one Ri Ri look we’ll be recreating. Alicia Keys chose a silver satin evening dress for her close up and sexed up her responsible style with a one-shoulder design and a flash of leg courtesy of a seriously sexy side-split.

Next season, now

There’s always a handful of bright young things you can rely on to give you a taste of next season’s new looks, now. Zoe Salanda is fast-becoming Team LBD’s go-to girl for up to the minute style credentials for every occasion and the VMAs was no different. Zoe spiced up A/W’s fascination with Victorian lace in a complexion enhancing cream dress with an embellished collar and lust-worthy lace-up shoes. Never one to shy away from a delectable designer look Emma Watson impressed with what we can only dub ‘prixing’ (that’s print-mixing!) in a colour clashing Peter Pilotto panel dress with tribal-esque print skirt. You heard it hear first!
