Coco Chanel may be responsible for pioneering the classic little black dress in the 1920s, but at this morning's Spring/ Sumer 2012 Chanel show, the iconic dress came into its own for the 21st century. The extravagant Paris show followed an underwater-themed backdrop, complete with performances from Lily Allen on a raised haystack and Florence Welch in a giant clam! Chiffon dresses in all the colours of the sea were paraded down the icy white runway, but our favourites were the updated LBDs: a tuxedo-inspired piece, and a contemporary black swing dress with appliqué fish scales. The stars didn't disappoint either, with Lily in a silver and black futuristic mini dress and Florence donning quirky tassels. Chanel's president Bruno Palovsky thanked head designer Karl Lagerfeld (pictured with Florence) for keeping Chanel's collections so creatively up-to-date but conceded that our favourite little black dress simply 'transcends time'. And who are we to argue with Chanel?
