It's the biggest fashion party of the year and last night we saw the A-list turn out in an incredible kaleidoscope of style for the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute Gala. The theme for this year, China: Through The Looking Glass, provided a trend for flamboyance that each celebrity interpreted in unique form at the fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. With tickets costing a huge $25,000 a pop, it's no wonder the guests made an effort! Read on to see this year's most magnificent gowns and unique ensembles...

Golden Girls

Proving gold is never a failure on the red carpet: Kate Hudson glittered in a flowing Michael Kors gown. Kate Beckinsale also opted for the shimmering shade in a Diane von Fürstenberg dress whilst Jessica Chastain was regal in a plunging, Givenchy Haute Couture gown by Riccardo Tisci.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West caused their usual impact on the red carpet, with Kim stealing the spotlight in a beautifully feather hemmed, sheer paneled number designed by Peter Dundas for Roberto Cavalli. Shop our stunning collection of evening dresses for your own red-carpet worthy look.

Ladies in Red

Never a failure on the red carpet, red was a popular colour of choice at this year's Met Gala, with each celebrity interpreting the colour in their own unique style. Poppy Delivingne even upstaged her sister Cara in a striking poppy embellished gown by Marchesa. Jennifer Lopez opted for her signature sheer style in a beautiful, custom-made dress by Donatella Versace. Vogue editor Anna Wintour also opted for a poppy emebllished gown with a more orange tone to complement her pale complexion from Chanel Haute Couture. Reese Witherspoon opted for a much more simple design by Jason Wu, which showed off her impressive figure and sleek style. Rita Ora was surprisingly subdued in comparison to her usually outrageous red carpet style, but looked divine in a fur trimmed gown by Tom Ford. Making an appearance next to her husband George Clooney, Lawyer Amal Clooney proved she's not shy to mix with the celebrities and compete in the style stakes as she wore a Maison Margiela ‘Artisanal’ gown, custom-made by John Galliano.

Beyonce

Proving the saying, 'save the best til last' Beyonce was fashionably late and walked the red carpet last, but it was certainly worth waiting for. Needless to say she turned to her alter ego Sasha Fierce to channel an amazingly daring look by Givenchy on the red carpet alongside rapper husband Jay-Z. The sheer dress was intricately and strategically embellished to show off the 33-year-old superstar's incredible figure.

Tailored Triumph

Opting for something different, these style icons turned the tables opting for trousers as opposed to the usual gown. Sienna Miller was a vision in a plunging, red tasseled trouser suit by Thakoon that she sartorially styled with matching black accessories. Cara Delevingne chose a jumpsuit from one of her favourite designers, Stella McCartney, and accessorised in her quirky style with fake floral tattoos across her arms and chest. Diane Kruger looked utterly feminine in Chanel Couture and paired her beautifully embellished top and trousers with a striking red clutch and pretty floral hair corsage.

Bridal Inspiration

Turning to the palest shade of glamour, these white gowns made for a head-turning look at the Met Gala this year. Colombian actress Sofia Vergara nailed the look in a striking chiffon gown by Marchesa. Singer Selena Gomez translated the theme to beautiful effect in a gown by bridal connoisseur Vera Wang, which she wore confidently with a pretty orchid head garland. Amanda Seyfried paired her ladylike Givenchy Couture gown with a bold berry lip and dainty accessories.

Lilac Embroidery

Donning a regal shade of violet with a splash of beautiful embroidery, these ladies showcased an elegant change to the bolder styles on the red carpet this year, yet each managed to construe the style in their own unique way. Emily Blunt wore a pale Prada gown with quirky navy cape, whilst Alexa Chung opted for a strapless gown by Erdem paired with vintage-style baby blue kitten heels. Model Irina Shayk showed off her enviable figure in a mermaid-esque cut-out gown and cemented the look with flowing locks.

The ones who dared to be different

There are some fashionistas who you know you can count on for a decidedly different take on the theme and of course we had that in abundance from the likes of Rihanna, Lady Gaga and even Katy Perry. Solange Knowles dressed up in an unusual metallic dress by Giles Deacon. Rihanna opted for a bold shade of yellow for the red carpet and her Gui Pei, fur-trimmed gown with an amazingly long train certainly had the flash bulbs going.   Lady Gaga turned geisha in a striking Balenciaga ball gown, which featured sparkly metallic tights over her favourite sky-high platform boots. Katy Perry also tried a dramatic look with a gown by Marchesa and matching gloves and bag that tied with her 'paint can' theme. Anne Hathaway's hooded, golden Ralph Lauren gown certainly garnered attention with some saying it paid an ode to the May 4th Star Wars theme of the day. Style icon Sarah Jessica Parker was miles away from her cool Oscar de la Renta gown from last year and opted for a very daring headdress by Philip Treacy to pair with her one shouldered, poppy-themed gown, which she designed in collaboration with H&M.

The Victoria Secret's Angels

If you can count on anyone to turn out in superb style it has to be the models who live and breathe fashion for a job and these angels certainly know how to make an entrance. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley complemented her flawless figure with a cut-out dress by Atelier Versace, whilst Lily Aldridge opted for a ruffled, pale blue gown by Carolina Herrera, with both models paired their gowns with a dark berry lip. Candice Swanapoel was a vision in golden lace in a slinky Michael Kors gown that clung to her figure and finished in a pretty fishtail train.

Metallic Panache

New girl on the block, Dakota Johnson dazzled at the Met Gala in a daring mini dress by Chanel Couture, a stark contrast to her dark navy ball gown at last year's event. She paired her dazzling dress with a quirky clutch, strappy black sandals and cool tousled bob. Carey Mulligan kept to her classic style with a chic LBD by Balenciaga that featured an Elizabethan-esque metallic metal collar. Miranda Kerr flaunted her slender model pins in a metallic Louis Vuitton sheath dress that was beautifully balanced out with prettily patterned sheer sleeves.

Twenties Inspired

Turning to the fabulous twenties era, these ladies interpreted the theme with gorgeous Gatsby allure. Supermodel Naomi Campbell wore a Burberry Prorsum gown that had a contemporary plunging neckline with a cool feathered fishtail. Ellie Goulding went for a fringed look from Marchesa that had flapper-style written all over it; worn with a modern bob and strappy metallic sandals, she had the look down to a T. Rachel Weisz donned a ladylike Chanel Couture gown, with its ankle-length hem subtly hinting to the fabulous flapper decade.
