‘Punk’ meets red carpet dressing at the Met Ball

‘Punk’ meets red carpet dressing at the Met Ball

The theme of this year’s Met Gala Ball was ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’ and that meant our favourite black red carpet gown was a key feature at the star-studded event. While some celebs went to town on the Gothically gorgeous theme with luxe lace, mesh detailing and seriously smouldering eye make-up others gave their outfits their own, off-piste twist, (Gwynnie, we’re looking at you!).

From the fancy dress style fashion to the hardcore haute couture and all the gorgeous ‘we’d-so-wear-that-on-a-Saturday-night’ dresses in between, here’s Team LBD’s favourite punk-inspired A-list looks from last night and the dresses you can buy at to recreate them…

Make like the queen of paired-back cool in this simple swing style black lace dress. The floral lace detailing gives the dress a feminine twist while the black drapery lends itself to sexy Gothic style. We recommend following in Alexa’s fashionable footsteps with a chic black ankle-strap shoe and keeping your accessories low-key.

We’re used to seeing January Jones in 50s-esque prom styles and tapered trousers on and off screen so we were really impressed with the actress’ efforts towards last night’s punk theme. Whether you’re dressing up fancy dress style or just hitting the bar at the weekend you can copy January’s little black embellished dress look with our Aftershock dress for just £55. Keep hair pinned back to let the dress do the talking, choose some statement shoes for a real party feel and co-ordinate your nail varnish and lips. Super smoky eyes are optional.

A little bit corpse bride, a little bit princess-gone-bad and still Ashley Greene’s Gothic black ball gown works! It’s the perfect amount of fairytale with the exaggerated shape and strapless sweetheart style and fits perfectly with the night’s theme with the old-world gold baroque detailing and midnight black hue. If you’ve got a ball coming up then be brave and go for black like Ashley in this elaborate full-length ruffle evening dress by Elliot Claire and add metallic accessories.

Can this girl do no wrong? If we’d been lucky enough to grace the Met Gala red carpet we’d like to think we’d have gone down the same route as Jen with a statement black textured dress (very SS13), wow-worthy platforms and the addition of a funeral-esque black netted fascinator. She looks like a sexy Spanish Dolce & Gabbana advert and you can too with our Kate Fearnley dress which is now in the sale! The pop of purple will stop you looking too sombre and classic pearl earrings will finish the outfit perfectly.

Get the look: Kate Fearnley Florence Dress in Black, Was £230, Now £115.

Cara’s off-duty style is often speckled with a statement stud, a leather panel or punky accessory so the ‘Chaos meets Couture’ themed gala was the model of the moment’s kind of gig. She looked very at home in her figure-flattering long sleeved, full-length black dress and we think even the gold stud detailing would have looked at ease on a regular premiere red carpet. If studs aren’t really your thing you can still copy Cara’s slimming style with Bernshaw’s bestselling Karolina dress and a long gold pendant.

Get the look: Bernshaw Karolina Dress in Black, Was £399, Now £200.

If this is what punk looks like we might have to start working the trend a little more often! Last night Claire Danes positively glowed in this subtly shimmery sequin maxi dress and we have an amazing copycat of a dress available at right now, for just £150! Get it before it’s gone!

Get the look: Kelly Ewing Lily Dress in Gun Metal, £150.

The cut-out dress may be a season favourite but the sultry, skin-revealing style is much older than that. Punk fashion claims the midriff-flashing style as it’s own and in homage to the bare-all fashion era Dakota Fanning donned a sexy black cut-out dress with mesh inserts last night. This is a great look for summer parties and the grown-up shade perfectly balances out the sexy skin flashes.

Get the look: HMH Couture Euterpe Dress in Black, £200.

Another celeb who was happy to dive right in to the punk theme was Ginnifer Goodwin who mixed super-glam and glitz with edgy make-up and hair to achieve her red carpet look yesterday. Taking inspiration from the slimming panel detail on Ginnifer’s dress and the classic black and gold colour palette we’ve chose this body-con dress from BlingDeenie which is perfect for a night on the town. Team with choppy hair, lots of black eyeliner and high heels.

Get the look: BlingDeenie Gold Bolt Bodycon Dress, £110.

In fairness to Gwynnie, punk fashion is all about pushing boundaries, not conforming and going your own way. So when on the one night of the year she knew everyone else would be lathered in lace, sashaying in studs and probably choosing an all-black dress code, the controversial actress and lifestyle guru wore a Barbie pink ball gown, it kind of worked. Break the mould at your next special occasion in this beautiful evening dress from Elliot Claire and choose matchy matchy accessories for that prim and proper look Gwyneth does so well here.
