Breakfast at Tiffany's celebrates its 50th anniversary

It's fifty years since Team LBD favourite Breakfast at Tiffany's was first screened in cinemas, and the legend of Audrey Hepburn and her iconic little black dress continues to live on. The 1961 film begins with Hepburn strolling along Fifth Avenue at dawn in an ankle-skimming silk dress, pearls and dark glasses. She goes on to wear this Hubert de Givenchy black gown in almost every scene, from city sidewalks to cocktail parties and fabulous dinners, securing the classic black dress as one of the most iconic wardrobe pieces of all time. In fact, Hepburn was later coined 'the Patron Saint of the LBD' by designers of the time, despite her Holly Golightly character being originally intended for a more sexualised woman such as Marilyn Monroe. Nonetheless, Hepburn's interpretation of Golightly was incomparably stylish, elegant and sophisticated; a look that continues to be loved and live on through the high street and luxury retailers of today. Celebrity followers of Audrey-chic include Chanel-addict Alexa Chung, who favours black retro cuts and pearl detailing, and Kate Middleton who epitomises everything ladylike in longer lengths and feminine tailoring. Take inspiration from Holly Golightly in this James Perse dress and Dower & Hall pearls or try Swarovski earrings and some sophisticated silk gloves. In her later films Hepburn continued her love affair with the classic LBD, making it her fail-safe and recognised style. One of our favourites is the volumous black prom dress Hepburn wore for the film Sabrina, which is a recurring style in design greats like Gucci and Vivienne Westwood. For true Hepburn style, accessorise with a delicate heel or vintage clutch like this crystal one from Coast, but try to keep colours dark in homage to Parisian chic, where it all began fifty years ago. Team LBD's favourite Breakfast at Tiffany's turns 50 this week. Who are your other little black dress style icons? Tell us on Twitter now!
