Beanie Major reveals her top 2012 jewellery trends

Jewellery designer, judge for Swarovski's 2012 Central St Martin's competition and lover of all things shiny, Beanie Major is the founder and editor of Team LBD's new favourite jewellery blog, InDetail. Beanie is a girl after our own heart and has 'always been obsessed with jewellery'. She told Team LBD: 'The clothes I wear are very understated, normally black (what's not to love!) and more about simplicity and texture so jewellery gives personality to what I wear'. So who better to fill us in on the best jewellery trends and her hottest jewllery picks from Littleblackdress.co.uk this season...!?

'Jewellery was more prominent than ever at LFW this year - the launch of the BFC Rock Vault brought the hottest jewellery talent to Somerset House and the catwalk was buzzing with jewels from tribal nose rings by Ashish to Holly Fulton's signature graphic designs' says Beanie. 'Whilst it's great to take inspiration from what's trending on the catwalk, it's important when buying jewellery to choose a trend that really appeals to you. Jewellery can be a lot more personal than clothes so whether you like to pile it on in true Anna dello Russo style or you prefer something a little more subtle, select carefully and you can find pieces that outlive any current trends.'

Influences: This year's awards shows from the Bafta's to the Oscars or any red carpet affair for that matter. Also Elizabeth Taylor's jewellery- there was a woman who knew a statement earring when she saw one! On the catwalk: Holly Fulton and Meadham Kirchhoff. What's it all about? Jaw-dropping, statement looks, oversized pieces, chandelier styles, and lots of gold and gemstones. Beanie's top tips for wearing the trend: Keep other jewellery simple and to a minimum so as not to detract from your statement look earrings. In the summer pair with head scarves, oversized frames and baggy linen shirts for the ultimate pool-side glamour. And when winter comes around tie your hair back into a tight, high ponytail to emphasise your jaw line and pair with high necklines or collared shirts to draw attention to your ears. Why Beanie loves it: It instantly says something about you whilst being elegant and super versatile. Beanie's LBD picks: Zoe & Morgan Sassy Earrings in Gold, £151, Fiorelli Gold with Light Green Stone Earrings, £12.95.

Influences: Vintage tea parties, Alexander McQueen. On the catwalk: Richard Chai, Mary Katrantzou. What's it all about? Carved flowers, colour and enamel. Beanie's top tips for wearing the trend: Choose pastel colours and rose gold for summer and for winter take a style tip from the catwalk collections of McQueen and Richard Chai. Mix bright colour with a black leather jacket/belt/shoes to give a grungy edge to your florals. Why Beanie loves it: It's elegant and super versatile and instantly gives your LBD a summery, feminine feel. Beanie's LBD picks: Tatty Devine Mexican Embroidery Large Necklace, £144, Fiorelli Gold Flower Drop Earrings, £14.95, Bill Skinner Enamelled Floral Bug Ring, £35.

Influences: The feline trend is huge and mostly sticks in my mind because of Cartier's latest video which is chic and sleek and big and a celebration of their trademark leopard. On the catwalk: Alber Elbaz's tiger head chokers for Lanvin AW12 and the Mawi panther collection. What's it all about? Gold, enamel, stone beads, ultimately classic designs being re-interpreted. Beanie's top tips for wearing the trend: Find the feline within you whether it be tiger/leopard/pantha or lion! Why Beanie loves it: It's darkly feminine as well as being strong and elegant. The Bill Skinner range at Littleblackdress.co.uk is just perfect for working the feline trend in to your LBD wardrobe! Beanie's LBD picks: Tatty Devine Tiger Necklace, £88, Bill Skinner Stretch Bracelet in Blue, £65, Bill Skinner Leopard Bangle, £75, Bill Skinner Black Lion Head Necklace, £125.

Influences: Hilary Alexander stated that 'black is the new black' and I couldn't agree more. As with every season the McQueen collection featured a vast array of skulls this year. Also newcomers Moxham and Tessa Edwards who I'm keeping my eye on are hot on the trend. On the catwalk: McQueen, Moxhan, Abbey Lee and Felice Fawn. What's it all about? Gothic crosses, ornate skills, black gemstones, leather inserts, hard-wearing chains, simple studs and oxidised silver. Beanie's top tips for wearing the trend: Keep this look simple and wear it with confidence even if it's not the style you'd normally choose- this trend is more about attitude than anything else. And don't over-do it with skulls and crosses and black gems all at once. Why Beanie loves it: It adds a mysterious, dark edge to any outfit but finishes a black evening gown off perfectly. Beanie's LBD picks: Brandts Ruthenium Plated Sterling Silver Twist Bracelet, £75, Fiorelli Adjustable Jet Glass Oval Ring, £17.95, Rok Chix Silver Skull Stud Earrings, £25, Zoe & Morgan Roxxx Earrings, £295.

Influences: A host of British events such as the royal wedding, the Queens upcoming Jubilee and of course the Olympics. Tatty Devine is a jewellery brand that is hugely influencing our patriotic jewellery style this season.

What's it all about? Gold. And of course red, white and blue. Bunting-style pieces are huge too as are nature-inspired designs and regal, symbolic pendants. Beanie's top tips for wearing the trend: Go all out kitsch with this trend- match your tea dress to your prim and proper jewellery and your long black dress with ornate, crown pendants. Why Beanie loves it: It's the most celebratory jewellery trend of them all! Beanie's LBD picks: Bill Skinner Ladybird Bamboo Stack Rings, £55, Bill Skinner Honey Comb Ring, £55, Bill Skinner Snail Bangle, £75, Tatty Devine Crown Necklace, £15.

Influences: Leather gloves on this season's catwalks, and the high street's favourite tribal trend. On the catwalk: Givenchy, Bottega Veneta, Missoni and Fyodor Golen. What's it all about? There's a strong emphasis on the wrist with this trend so cuffs and layered bangles are great. In terms of necklaces, rings and earring anything that resembles this layered, wrap-around style will work. Beanie's top tips for wearing the trend: For the summer I'll be layering up multiple bangles, cuffs and necklaces for a boho-inspired look. When winter comes around again I'll get more out of my investment pieces by stacking bracelets over long leather gloves and knitted sleeves and showing off my neckline at Christmas parties with lashings of chains for sophisticated, urban appeal. Why Beanie loves it: It's a playful look and it transcends seasons making it one well worth investing in. Beanie's LBD picks: Fiorelli Double Ridged Cuff, £29.95, Fiorelli Criss Cross Bangle, £49.95.
