Remembering Vidal Sassoon

World renowned hairdresser, Vidal Sassoon, sadly lost his battle with leukaemia and passed away in Los Angeles earlier this week. Widely credited with revolutionising the way women felt about their hair and hailed as a true icon, Team LBD looks back at his fashion-fuelled journey... Awarded a CBE in 2009, Sassoon started out as a 14 year old 'shampoo boy' but soon rose to become an integral part of London's swinging sixties scene. By breaking away from the typical 'weekly wash and set' of the time and allowing women the freedom to style their own hair on a daily basis, his cuts had a direct impact on fashion. He pioneered the geometric cuts designed to enhance the simplicity of daring miniskirts and shift dresses and seriously revolutionised both the way women felt about their hair and their wardrobe. As The Daily Telegraph's Hilary Alexander tweeted in her tribute: 'Much sadness on the death of Vidal Sassoon. He banished the beehive, boosted the bob; most radical hair shift since the 1920s.' Whilst Sassoon's haircuts were a favourite amongst sixties models such as Mary Quant and Grace Coddington, today's red-carpet favourites were also quick to pay tribute, with Erin O'Connor crediting the hairdresser with 'the best haircut of my life' and fashion editors citing his cutting-edge styles as the inspiration behind Emma Watson's now iconic pixie crop. Having opened his first salon in London in 1954 before expanding to the US, Germany and Canada, Vidal Sassoon leaves behind an impressive legacy including several prestigious training academies and a large haircare range sold worldwide.
