44 year old (can you believe that!?) Australian actress Cate Blanchett opted to wear a monochrome evening dress by Alexander McQueen for the premiere of her latest film, Blue Jasmine, Woody Allen’s homage to Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. As the crème de la crème of the world’s fashion designers are falling over themselves to dress the Oscar winning star – Karl Lagerfeld custom made two iconic Chanel jackets for the film in the middle of fashion week, proclaiming that for Cate he’d "do anything" – we all want a little piece of Cate’s style in our lives.

From Christian Dior to Chanel, to Valentino to Proenza Schouler, monochromatic colour schemes were seen everywhere on the AW13 runways. This monochrome evening dress was a surprising  choice for the critically acclaimed actress given her penchant for unusual, quirky styles. However, the understated elegance of the piece was perfectly pitched to Cate's protagonist in Blue Jasmine – a fashionable New York housewife dripping in diamonds and designer labels who, like her counterpart Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire, is stripped back through her financial and social decline.

Recreate Cate’s minimalistic red carpet glamour with our timeless monochrome evening dress from Bershaw (was £375, now £262.50). Keep accessories to a minimum with our grey patent clutch bag from Bourne (was £127, now £88.90) and a pair of black pearl earrings from The Paula Bolton Collection (£17).
